Why deck stairs are priced per step
A stair is a repeated unit: each step needs a tread, usually a riser, its share of the stringers and the time to cut and fit them. So the cost scales with the number of steps, and the number of steps comes straight from the height of the deck. The calculator divides the height by about 7½ in, rounds up to get the risers, and takes one away for the treads, because the deck surface is the top step.

The code rules that shape the stair
- Risers no taller than 7¾ in, and no more than ⅜ in difference between the tallest and shortest.
- Treads at least 10 in deep, measured nosing to nosing.
- At least 36 in wide.
- A graspable handrail 34–38 in above the nosings once there are four or more risers.
- A guard on any open side more than 30 in above the ground.
- A light at the top of the stair is required in many jurisdictions.

Saving money on deck stairs
Pre-cut stringers from a home centre save cutting time but only come in a few rise counts — measure first. Open risers (no riser board) save material and let light through, though some codes limit the opening to 4 in. A concrete landing pad is often required at the foot of the stair so the stringers do not sit on soil; a paver pad on compacted gravel is a cheaper option where it is allowed.

- How many steps do I need for my deck?
- Divide the height from the ground to the top of the decking by about 7.5 in and round up — that is the number of risers. There is always one fewer tread than risers because the deck itself is the top step.
- Do deck stairs need a railing?
