Putting a hot tub on a deck
A filled hot tub is the heaviest thing most decks will ever carry, and it never comes off. Here is what the load actually is, what framing carries it, and how to tell whether your deck can take one.
Start with the real weight, not the shipping weight
The number on the box is the dry weight, and it is the smallest of the three numbers that matter. Filled weight is dry weight, plus the water, plus the people. Water weighs 8.34 pounds per US gallon, and deck design guidance puts an adult occupant at about 185 pounds.
A common six-person tub is around 800 pounds dry and holds 400 gallons. That is 3,336 pounds of water and, with six adults, another 1,110 pounds — about 5,250 pounds in total. Spread over a 7 by 7 footprint, that works out at roughly 107 pounds per square foot.
Put that against what a deck is built for. Residential decks are framed to 50 pounds per square foot: 40 of live load plus 10 of dead. Why the deck's total capacity is the wrong number to look at
People often reason that a 16 by 12 deck is designed for 9,600 pounds, and a 5,250 pound tub is well inside that. It is the most common mistake in this whole subject.
Design load is an average across the whole surface. It says every square foot can carry 50 pounds; it does not say you can put 5,250 pounds in one corner. The tub loads the handful of joists directly beneath it, and those joists see 107 pounds per square foot regardless of how much spare capacity the far end of the deck has. What actually carries a hot tub
There are three workable approaches, in descending order of how much most people like them.
- Put the tub on grade. A 4-inch reinforced concrete pad, or a compacted gravel bed with precast pads, takes the load without involving the deck at all. Build the deck around the tub so the coping sits flush. This is the cheapest and the most reliable, and it is why so many hot tub decks are ground level.
- Give the tub its own posts and footings. Frame a dedicated platform inside the deck footprint, carried on its own beam and footings down below the frost line, structurally independent of the deck frame. The deck then only has to support people walking around it.
- Reinforce the existing frame. Double the joists under the footprint by sistering a matching joist to each one, or close the spacing to 12 inches on centre, and run a beam directly under the tub carried on new footings. This is the retrofit answer and the one most likely to need an engineer's sign-off.
What does not work is adding a few extra joists and hoping. The load has to reach the ground, and if the beam and footings below were sized for an ordinary deck, stiffening the joists just moves the problem down one level.
Framing details that get missed
- Footings under the tub carry a concentrated load, so they usually need a larger diameter or a flared base than the deck's other footings — 16 or 18 inches rather than 12. Work out the concrete with the footing concrete calculator.
- Access matters. Service panels need to come off, so leave a removable section of decking or skirting on at least one side.
- Drainage matters more. Water splashes out constantly, and anything under a tub stays wet. Slope the surface away, keep the framing ventilated, and never enclose the space tightly.
- The tub's own frame is not a structural member. It is a cabinet. Support has to be continuous under the base, not just at the corners, which is why a solid pad beats a few blocks.
- Check the deck's ledger before adding any load near the house. A ledger sized for an ordinary deck does not become adequate because the tub is on the far side.
Permits, electrical and bonding
Two permits are usual: a structural one for the deck modification and an electrical one for the circuit. Most tubs need a dedicated 240-volt GFCI-protected supply with a disconnect within sight of the tub but at least 5 feet away, and the metal parts need bonding. None of this is DIY territory in most jurisdictions.
Many building departments also want a structural detail stamped by an engineer for a tub on an elevated deck. Ask before you frame — the answer sometimes changes which corner of the yard makes sense, and a drawing produced at the planning stage costs far less than one produced after a stop-work order. Signs an existing deck should not take a tub
- Joists at 24 inches on centre. That spacing is marginal for decking alone and nowhere near enough for a concentrated load.
- Posts sitting directly in soil, or with soft wood at ground level when probed with a screwdriver.
- A ledger with no visible flashing, or one fastened with deck screws rather than lags or bolts.
- Any noticeable bounce when you walk across the middle of the deck.
- Rust streaks running down from the joist hangers, which mean the fasteners are corroding.
Any one of these means the deck has an existing problem that a hot tub will find. Fix the frame first, then talk about the tub.
