The rise-and-run rules that govern every deck stair

Deck stairs are the most code-scrutinized part of a deck, and the reason is simple: uneven steps cause falls. The IRC (section R311.7) caps the riser height at 7-3/4 inches, sets a minimum tread depth of 10 inches, and — the rule most DIY builds fail — requires that the largest and smallest riser in a flight differ by no more than 3/8 inch. That last one is why you never "eyeball" the bottom step. You divide total height by the number of steps and accept whatever decimal you get, then cut every stringer from a single template.

Measuring total rise correctly

Total rise is measured from the finished deck surface to the finished landing surface — not to the dirt. If you're pouring a 4-inch concrete pad, that pad's top is your zero point. Get this wrong and every riser is off. Run a level string from the deck out past the stair location, measure down to the landing, and use that number. Then remember the bottom stringer gets its bottom cut shortened by one tread thickness so the first step isn't taller than the rest.

How many stringers, and how far apart

Stringer spacing is limited by the tread material's ability to span. Two 2×6 treads span 36 inches comfortably, so a 36-inch stair needs three stringers. A 48-inch stair needs four. Composite treads are the exception: nearly every manufacturer requires stringers no more than 12 inches on center for stair treads because composite is far less stiff than wood — a 48-inch composite stair often needs five stringers. Check your specific brand's install guide before you cut.

Landings, guards, and handrails

Three requirements catch homeowners at inspection. First, a landing at the bottom that's at least as wide as the stair and 36 inches deep in the direction of travel — packed gravel doesn't count, use concrete or pavers. Second, a guardrail on any stair with more than 30 inches of drop, with balusters that block a 4-3/8 inch sphere. Third, a graspable handrail 34-38 inches above the tread nosing on any flight with four or more risers, returned to a post or wall at both ends.
