Pool deck area is ring area, not rectangle area — the deck wraps the pool and the pool itself contributes nothing usable. The math is the outer circle minus the pool circle, multiplied by how far around you're wrapping. That's why a "small" pool deck often turns out bigger than people expect: a 6-foot-wide half wrap around a 24-foot round pool is about 280 square feet, larger than most 12x20 decks.

How wide should the deck be?
Four feet is the practical minimum for walking and getting in and out safely. Six feet fits a lounge chair against the rail. Eight to ten feet on one side gives you a real seating area with a table — and a common, cost-effective layout is a 4-foot walkway around most of the pool that widens into a 10x12 platform on the entry side.
Never attach the deck to the pool
An above-ground pool wall is a thin steel or resin shell that carries no structural load and flexes measurably as water level and temperature change. The deck must be entirely self-supporting on its own posts and footings, with a small gap — typically 1/2 to 1 inch — between the framing and the pool wall. Bolting framing to the top rail is the fastest way to deform a pool wall and void the pool warranty.
Pool-specific code requirements
Pool decks face stricter rules than ordinary decks. Expect all of the following: a guardrail everywhere the surface is more than 30 inches above grade, no climbable horizontal members in that guardrail (a ladder for a toddler is a code failure), a self-closing, self-latching gate with the latch at least 54 inches high at the top of any access stair, and often a full barrier so the deck itself becomes part of the pool enclosure. Many jurisdictions also require GFCI protection for any deck receptacle and set minimum distances from the pool for lighting.
Material and drainage choices that last
Constant splash-out and chlorine make material choice matter more here than on a dry deck. Ground-contact pressure-treated framing is the minimum; capped composite or PVC surfaces resist chlorine bleaching far better than stained wood and stay cooler under bare feet in light colors. Slope the frame away from the pool by about 1/8 inch per foot, use full 1/4-inch gaps so water drains fast, and tape every joist top — pool decks see more water in a season than most decks see in five years.
