Decking Boards

    Deck Tiles Calculator

Interlocking deck tiles snap together on a flat, hard surface — a concrete patio, a balcony slab, a roof membrane or a sound old deck — with no fasteners. Enter the area's length and width, the tile size and how many tiles come in a box. The calculator lays out the grid, counts full and cut tiles, adds a small allowance for breakage and pattern changes, and turns it into boxes and a price.

    Inputs

Most interlocking tiles are 12 × 12 in.

What deck tiles can go on

Interlocking tiles are a floating floor: each tile sits on a plastic grid that clips to its neighbours, and nothing is screwed down. BuildDirect describes its JF Outdoor tiles as made to sit on existing surfaces such as concrete, stone or waterproof membranes. That makes them a fast way to cover a stained patio slab, an apartment balcony or a roof deck, and they lift up again when you move.

They don't replace deck boards on joists — the tiles need continuous support. Over an old wood deck, the boards must be flat and firmly fastened. For a new deck surface, price boards with the deck boards calculator and compare with the composite deck cost calculator. Odd-shaped area? Measure it with the deck square footage calculator.

    Frequently asked questions

How many deck tiles do I need?
Divide the length and the width by the tile size, round each up, and multiply. A 10 × 12 ft patio with 12 in tiles is 10 × 12 = 120 tiles. Add about 5% for breakage and pattern changes — 126 tiles, or 13 boxes of 10.
How many deck tiles are in a box?
Usually 10 tiles of 12 × 12 in, covering 10 sq ft — that is how BuildDirect's JF Outdoor composite tiles and Home Depot's Pro Space acacia tiles are packed. Check the box: some brands pack 6, 11 or 44.
Can you put deck tiles on grass or dirt?
Not directly. Interlocking tiles are made to float on a flat, hard surface such as concrete, stone, pavers or a waterproof membrane. On soil they rock and sink; lay a compacted gravel or paver base first.
Can you lay deck tiles over an old wood deck?
Yes, if the deck boards are sound, flat and fastened down — the tiles add little stiffness and won't fix soft boards or a bouncy frame. Lay them across the boards and keep the gaps between deck boards open for drainage.
How much do interlocking deck tiles cost?
BuildDirect listed JF Outdoor composite tiles at $2.99 per sq ft on 1 October 2026, so 130 sq ft (13 boxes) for a 10 × 12 ft patio is $388.70. Enter the price per sq ft of the tile you choose — wood and stone-look tiles cost more.
