Deck Weight Capacity Calculator
Decks are not designed around a single total weight — they are designed around pounds per square foot. Enter the size and framing and this converts the design load into the numbers you actually want: total safe load, how many adults that works out to, and whether a specific heavy item fits inside the allowance.

Frequently asked questions
- How much weight can a deck hold?
- Multiply the area by the design load. A standard residential deck is framed for 50 pounds per square foot — 40 of live load plus 10 of dead load — so a 16 by 12 ft deck at 192 square feet is designed for 9,600 pounds total, of which about 7,680 pounds is available for people and furniture. That is roughly 41 adults, which is far more than will ever stand on it.
- Why can a deck rated for thousands of pounds not hold a hot tub?
- Because the rating is an average, not a total. Forty pounds per square foot means every square foot carries forty; it does not mean you can pile 7,000 pounds into one corner. A filled hot tub lands around 100 to 150 pounds per square foot over its own footprint, so the handful of joists beneath it see two to three times what they were sized for, even though the deck's overall total is nowhere near its limit.
- How many people can stand on my deck?
- Divide the available live load by 185 pounds per adult. It is almost always a bigger number than the deck will ever hold in practice — a 192 square foot deck works out near 41 people, which would be standing shoulder to shoulder. The load that actually matters on a crowded deck is the railing, which has to resist a 200 pound force in any direction at the top rail.
- Does an older deck still hold its design load?
- Not necessarily. Capacity depends on the weakest link, and on a deck over about fifteen years old that is usually the ledger connection, the fasteners, or a post base sitting in wet soil. Check the ledger flashing and fasteners, probe the posts at grade for soft wood, and look for rust streaks at the hangers before you assume the original numbers still apply.
