How much does a hot tub weigh when it is full?

Add three numbers: the dry weight from the spec sheet, the water (multiply the gallon capacity by 8.34 pounds), and the people. A typical six-person tub is around 800 pounds dry, holds 400 gallons — that is 3,336 pounds of water — and carries six adults at roughly 185 pounds each. That comes to about 5,250 pounds, or two and a half tons, sitting on maybe 49 square feet.

Can a normal deck hold a hot tub?

Usually not without work. Residential decks are framed to carry 50 pounds per square foot — 40 pounds of live load plus 10 of dead load. A full six-person tub puts roughly 100 to 110 pounds per square foot on the frame beneath it, so around double. Ground-level decks and slabs are the easy case; an elevated deck almost always needs extra joists, a beam under the tub, and its own footings.

What framing do I need under a hot tub?

The reliable approach is a dedicated support directly under the tub footprint rather than spreading the load: joists doubled or spaced at 12 inches on centre, a beam running under the tub, and footings under that beam sized for the point load and dug below the local frost line. On a new build it is far cheaper to set the tub on its own piers or a small slab and frame the deck around it.

Do I need a permit to put a hot tub on a deck?

Almost always, and often two — one structural for the deck modification and one electrical for the 240-volt circuit and bonding. Many jurisdictions also want a structural detail signed by an engineer when the tub sits on an elevated deck. Check with your building department before you order the tub, because the answer can change which spot in the yard makes sense.
