How much pressure a deck can take

Keep the tip 8 to 12 inches away and move along the length of the boards. If you see fuzz or light stripes, back off. Many composite warranties restrict pressure washing — check before you start.
Cleaner and stain for the job
Clean, let the deck dry for at least a day or two, then stain. The deck stain calculator sizes both the cleaner and the finish — the example uses the same function.
Worked example: A 224 sq ft deck (16 × 14 ft)
- Mixed deck cleaner at about 250 sq ft per gallon → 1 gal
- One coat of semi-transparent stain at about 200 sq ft per gallon → 2 gal
- Wait for the wood to dry: a few drops of water should soak in within a minute before you stain
About 1 gal of mixed cleaner and 2 gal of stain per coat, plus about 15% for railings and stairs.

What to look for on the listing
- GPM. Flow does the rinsing; for decks, 1.2–2 GPM electric or 2.3+ GPM gas is typical.
- Adjustable pressure or a range of tips, so you can stay well below the maximum.
- Quick-connect tips including 25° and 40°, and a soap tip for applying cleaner.
- Hose length long enough to reach the far side of the deck without moving the machine onto the boards.
- A surface cleaner rated for your washer's PSI and GPM if you plan to use one.

Is an electric pressure washer strong enough for a deck?
Yes. Most electric washers produce more pressure than wood needs. Gas machines are faster on very large areas because of higher flow, not because decks need more pressure.
Should I use a surface cleaner on a deck?
A surface cleaner gives even results on board tops because it holds a fixed distance. Keep the pressure moderate and use a wand for gaps, stairs and railings.
How long after pressure washing can I stain?
Usually 24 to 48 hours of dry weather, longer in humid conditions. Sprinkle water on the boards; if it soaks in within about a minute, the wood is ready.
Can you pressure wash composite decking?
Many manufacturers allow it at low pressure with a wide fan tip and a set distance, but some void the warranty. Check your decking's care guide first.
