Joist tape covers the top edge of joists, beams and rim boards so that water running through the deck-board gaps does not sit in the screw holes and the checks in the wood. It is cheap insurance: a frame that lasts as long as composite boards means you are not rebuilding the structure when the surface still looks new.

How many rolls you need
Tape goes on the top of every joist, rim board and beam, plus any blocking directly under board ends. The joist spacing calculator counts joists and total joist length; the example uses the same function.
Worked example: A 12 ft joist span, 16 ft wide deck, composite boards, 2x8 southern pine
- Joist spacing required: 16" on centre
- Joists: 13, totalling 156 linear ft
- Add about 40 ft for the rim board and end joists → 196 ft
- Add 10% for laps and waste, divide by 50 ft rolls → 5 rolls of narrow tape

What to look for on the listing
- Material. Butyl is the most forgiving in heat and cold; rubberized asphalt costs less but can soften in hot sun.
- Width. Joists are 1.5 in thick; a 2 in tape leaves a small overhang on each side. Use 4–6 in on doubled joists and beams.
- Roll length. Most rolls are 50 ft; price per foot, not per roll.
- Temperature range. Check the minimum application temperature if you build in spring or autumn.
- Compatibility. The tape must be rated for treated lumber and for any sealant you use nearby.
Does joist tape really help?
Treated lumber resists rot, but the top edge of a joist still stays wet under the boards, and every screw hole opens a path into the core. Tape keeps that edge drier and seals around each screw. It matters most under composite and PVC boards, which outlast untaped framing, and in wet climates. It does not replace ledger flashing, proper spacing for airflow, or good drainage below the deck.

Safety notes
- Work from the joists' ends or a plank, not by balancing on the top edges.
- A utility knife is the usual tool for tape — cut away from yourself and keep the blade retracted between cuts.
- If you are re-taping an existing frame, check for soft or rotten joists first; tape over rot hides a structural problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is butyl or asphalt joist tape better?
Butyl stays tacky across a wider temperature range and does not ooze in hot weather, so it is usually the better choice. Rubberized asphalt tape costs less and works well in moderate climates.
What width of joist tape do I need?
About 2 inches for single joists, and 4 to 6 inches for doubled joists, beams and rim boards.
Does joist tape go on pressure-treated wood?
Yes — that is what it is for. Make sure the wood is dry and clean when you apply it, and that the tape is rated for treated lumber.
How many rolls of joist tape do I need?

Is joist tape required by code?
Generally no; ledger flashing is the code-required detail. Many composite decking makers recommend joist tape, and some tie framing protection to their warranties.
